How to Prompt ChatGPT for a Resume That Actually Gets Interviews
Specific prompts, in order, that turn ChatGPT into a useful resume coach instead of a buzzword machine.
ChatGPT will happily write a generic, jargon-stuffed resume. To get one that gets interviews, you need to prompt it in stages. Here is the exact sequence.
Step 1: load it with raw material
Do not ask ChatGPT to "write a resume." Give it everything first:
I am going to paste (1) the job description I am applying to, (2) my current resume, and (3) a list of 5-10 wins from my last 3 years. Do not write anything yet. Just confirm you have all three.
Step 2: extract what the job actually wants
From the JD, list the top 8 things this employer is screening for, in priority order. Separate "must-have skills", "nice-to-have skills", and "implicit signals" (e.g., comfort with ambiguity).
This is the hidden rubric your resume is being scored against. You can see it now.
Step 3: map your wins to their rubric
For each of the 8 things, pick the strongest item from my wins list that proves I have it. If I have no good match for an item, say so explicitly. Do not invent experience.
Forcing the model to admit gaps is what makes the rest honest.
Step 4: rewrite bullets with the X-Y-Z format
Rewrite each chosen win as a resume bullet in the format: "Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y] by doing [Z]." Maximum 2 lines per bullet. Lead with a strong verb. No buzzwords (synergy, leverage, robust, dynamic).
Step 5: tailor the summary
Write a 3-line professional summary that pattern-matches the JD's top 3 priorities and references my single most relevant credential. No first person. No "results-driven professional."
Step 6: critique pass
Now act as a hiring manager screening this for 10 seconds. What are the 3 weakest parts? Rewrite them.
Why this sequence works
You are not asking ChatGPT to "write a resume." You are using it as a junior recruiter who reads the JD carefully, scores you against it, and rewrites your wins in the format hiring managers expect. The output is dramatically better and noticeably yours.
